Stravinsky’s Concerto in
E flat major, commissioned in 1937 by Robert Woods
Bliss to celebrate the thirtieth anniversary of the building of
Dumbarton Oaks, his splendid residence in Georgetown, near
Washington; the Suite for
orchestra op. 80 which Fauré took in 1900 from his
stage music for the play
Pelléas et Mélisande by Maeterlinck, and
Suite n. 2 taken
in 1934 from the ballet
Bacchus et Ariane by Roussel. The Polish pianist
Piotr Anderszewski, one of the finest up-and-coming talents on
the international scene, will be performing the
Concerto in D major K. 451,
composed by Mozart in 1784 while he was living in Vienna.

Description:
Classical music concert: Carydis and Steinbacher playing. Born
in Athens in 1974, the conductor Constantinos Carydis is a
rising star on the music scene who has already been engaged to
perform in the future in a number of major European orchestras.
For his début in Florence, he has chosen the Symphonic Poem
The Sorcerer’s Apprentice
by Dukas, composed in 1897 and inspired by the ballad
Der Zauberlehrling
by Goethe, and the two Suites taken from the ballet
Daphnis et Chloé
begun by Ravel in 1909 on a commission from Sergei Diaghilev for
the Ballets Russes, the famous dance company which he had just
founded and which this year celebrates its hundredth
anniversary. The ballet was performed on 8th June 1912 at the
Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris, choreographed by Michel Fokine.
The German violinist Arabella Steinbacher will be playing
Prokofiev’s Second
Concerto in G minor op. 63
on the priceless 1716 Booth Stradivarius owned
by the Nippon Music Foundation.

contralto parts and the parts for the chorus are taken from the
collection Des Knaben
Wunderhorn (The
Youth’s Magic Horn) and from the poem
Die Auferstehung
(The Resurrection)
by Klopstock.
The performance will feature the soprano Barbara Frittoli and
the contralto Marjana Lipovšek.
