It was fashionable in medieval times for the
gentlemen of Pisa to buy holiday villas in the hills as a summer
retreat. Originally, the Borgo di Colleoli was a working estate
producing olive oil, grapes and crops until the 18th century. At
this time its purpose changed to more recreational activities
and architectural modifications were initiated to improve the
quality of life and interior aesthetics. Today, the Palazzo di
Colleoli is everything you would expect from a hotel of its
calibre.
The recent refurbishment, undertaken by local
craftsman, has created a site of ‘simple, harmonious beauty’
which reflects its historical importance. Indeed, the original
Agostini family crest can still be seen above the entrance to
the villa.
